Escape or Enlightenment?
Check out the fourth installment from Andrew’s recent interview with India’s Speaking Tree:
Question: What do you think is the reason for the resurgence of interest in all things spiritual? Is it just a fad or more than that?
Answer: I’m not so sure there is a ‘resurgence’ in ‘all things spiritual.’ I do know that in modern India, most of the benefactors of the Motherland’s great economic leap forward are bearing levels of stress and tension that are truly overwhelming. That’s why so many seem to be turning to spirituality. But more often than not, they are seeking for relief — not for realization. They are seeking for escape, not Enlightenment. There’s nothing wrong with seeking for relief from stress as long as we don’t confuse it with the spiritual heroism of India’s greatest luminaries— those extraordinary exemplars of higher development who sacrificed everything to find the answers to life’s deepest existential questions.
