The Advance of Love
I recently read the new book by Bruce Sanguin, a revolutionary ordained minister from Vancouver, BC who is pioneering a new evolutionary interpretation of Christian theology. In The Advance of Love: Reading the Bible with an Evolutionary Heart, he creatively integrates the latest insights from cosmology, biology, cultural studies, developmental and integral theory with his own palpable grasp of perennial mystical wisdom. While many acknowledge evolution as an important big idea, Bruce has internalized it. Reading his wonderful prose directly awakens one’s heart, mind, and soul to the liberating truth that we’re all on a journey of infinite becoming that is good beyond measure. This is a truly wonderful gospel for our times.
In his opening chapter, Bruce also generously writes about my own work and how he sees it fitting into the broader discussion about the emerging evolutionary spirituality:
“Andrew Cohen is the guru of a community that takes conscious evolution seriously. He writes and speaks with the lucidity of one who knows the terrain intimately, and in his new book, Evolutionary Enlightenment, he challenges his readers to clarify their assumptions about the fundamental nature of life. For example, he asks: How do we make sense of the big bang? A universe came roaring into existence, starting out as an unimaginably dense point of matter and energy, and it turned into us after thousands of millions of years. Andrew asks, “When something came from nothing was it a big Yes, a big No, or a big Neutral?” How we answer that will determine whether we feel as though the universe is for us, against us, or whether it couldn’t care less about us.”
