MEDIA: Going Out of Your Mind Radio With Ed & Deb Shapiro

This is an interview that I did with my friends Ed & Deb Shapiro who are bonafide spiritual pioneers and veterans of the 60s revolution. It’s fun and interesting because they were asking me why things continue to be so bad and on the contrary I made the controversial point that we’re making enormous progress and that, in fact, things are better now than they ever have been:

Dear Andrew, I agree with the argument that humanity is progressing step by step, and that the situation now is much better than it was 1000 years ago. Concretely though, all this seems to be due to the Modern revolution and very little to Spirit ( except if we equate the scientific mind with Spirit which is a whole subject it itself). Science and modernity gave us this evolutionary forays. No modern revolution= no development; modern revolution= development. For example, India develops so much ,like Brazil, simply because they both go into their modern times, as Europe did some time ago and US did as well in the 19th century.
Isn’t then this argument a complete apology of materialism ?

I think we agree that scientific development seems to have had a huge impact on the spiritual freedom of humanity. At the level of smaller social groups, scientific communities ( at least the best of them) do work together much better than any spiritual community I have met.
If you agree to push it that far , then the obvious next step is :

can a spiritual community prove concretely that it can work to gather as well as the scientists do ? Can it handle a democratic system, can it deal with a fair and passionate amount of criticism in its rows without collapsing, can it agree to TOTAL and fierce intellectual freedom, can it provide an environment where true natural hierarchy doesn’t produce jealousy but love ? can at least one spiritual community show this achievement, which would simply be the same as what is going on in the very few best scientific communities around the world ?

If no spiritual community can show is this , how do we expect to transcend the from the scientific paradigm at a cultural level ? for people around the world, and rightfully so, because people are not stupid, what is working best at the moment is science. Can spiritual communities be humble enough to take the lesson and learn how the scientists do to work together in a passionate, open way ? or will they stick forever to the old paradigm that “they know better” in spite of factual evidence ?

How do we re-unite Science and Spirituality ?

    Love, Catherine
