A True Teacher
One of the biggest challenges of spiritual evolution is the cultivation of humility and courage. We need to have enough humility to enable us to recognize those who have genuinely reached a higher stage of development than our own, and then we need to have enough courage to aspire to meet them where they are. If a spiritual teacher is authentic, he or she will never finally be satisfied until the student either equals or surpasses the teacher’s attainment. A true teacher is someone who doesn’t want followers but rather wants authentic partners in this great task of evolutionary transformation.

Humility is easy in face of the huge time-space of cosmos, but how get courage in view of the enormous rise in population?
In spite of the way things often seem, life conditions for more people on our small planet are better than they’ve ever been. Read Steven Pinker’s new book The Better Angels of Our Nature.
I’m not so such there is such a thing as a “true teacher.” There is certainly better and ‘worse’ teachers. A teacher, in the implied sense, is not a separate reality, but part of a dynamic that depends upon the preparedness and receptivity of the so-called student. A small child can be a true teacher, especially if ‘properly nurtured.’ Nature, if faithfully observed, its forms and processes accurately perceived, can be a true teacher. A “true teacher” is anyone, everyone, and no one, depending on the circumstances. Simple stated a true teacher is not only a function of the “self,” but an interactive vessel, drawing from, actualizing, and perhaps translating knowledge, and insight, both grounded, and subtle. This is obviously a larger view of the question. Yet such derives from a view, and place that fully appreciates this direct fact. Thank you.
If a child is “properly nurtured,”(or not properly nurtured) then they are fundamentally conditioned by those who’ve nurtured them, and the conditioned responses of the mind, especially a child’s mind, is just that; a conditioned response. But aren’t we so much more than our nurturing?
Sometimes it’s more that a child reminds us that we were once so innocent that our conditioned responses were more spontaneous, more playful, and probably more honest than most adults are capable of being simply because the adult is responding from more deeply ingrained conditioned responses and the fears and desires of the separate self. Children have yet to fully develop their egos; they still have much that is undifferentiated from nature and their bodies. In other words, they haven’t developed healthy or unhealthy separation from nature and others. It’s a cultural myth, perpetuated by romantics, that children are “more wise.”
And nature, well, it just doesn’t care. It doesn’t have the self-awareness to be, or not be, exactly what it is. That’s why it’s so easy to feel “oneness” while immersed in nature; we can rather easily let down our guard when all that’s around us is completely detached, asking nothing of us…
but a “True Teacher” asks everything of us; They demand that we look at ourselves with fearless honesty and simultaneously demand we surrender our false separation and habitual contraction away from our True Nature. The True Teacher is the mirror by which we can look at exactly who and what we are at the deepest levels of the Self.
Don’t confuse the meaning provided by each of these experiences and expressions. The child and nature are not equivalent to the Master which is the Self.

Nada, on the one hand you imply that nurturing is a form of conditioning. On the other hand you state that we are so much more than that which results from this so-called conditioning. If, as I suggested, that a child can be a “true teacher,” why can’t that knowledge or insight derive from, in part, that aspect of experience that is “so much more that our nurturing.” Besides, nurturing is so much more than that which conditions. Nurturing entails direct training, ‘coaching,’ example, holding and caressing, and endless expressions of love. I might also suggest that a child does indeed “ask everything of us.”
As stated, “this is obviously a larger view,” that entails more that the ‘child’ example. You did not speak to the broader, and complete meaning offered; that is my essential point. Restated, there is no “true teacher” as a separate, and distinct being. As well, is it not our conditioned thinking that dictates as much. Where does this idea come from if not conditioned thought. I respectfully ask you to consider this. Thank you for your thoughtful response.
Hi John, Again I must point out the contradiction you offer in explaining “nurturing” as “so much more than that which conditions,” for indeed, “endless expressions of love” can condition a child to believe they are entitled to the continuation of “endless expressions of love”, which can have dire consequences for them as they grow and enter the wider world. Just as a lack of loving expression can, but not necessarily, have negative consequences, for the precise reason, that we are so much more than our nurturing. What we have been nurtured (using “nurturing as a positive term) or not nurtured to accept is what we must ultimately transcend in order to know the True or One Self which is always the True Teacher of our very own beings. So yes, I agree with your statement; the “True Teacher is not a separate or distinct being.” Children do “ask everything from us” because they haven’t separated from us; their reality is a pre-differentiated immersion, not a trans-differentiation, or transcendence, which is individuated consciousness. And besides, being the mother of three and Nondually Realized, I can easily say, it is not they who ask of us, but we who ask of ourselves, that is, by your example, the “True Teacher not a separate being.” Don’t you agree?
If I have the Eye to see the One Self in a child (or nature), then they are the reflection of the One Self seeing Itself, just as someone like Andrew Cohen is the reflection of the One Self seeing Itself. But I guarantee, what Andrew reflects is very different qualitatively; what he demands of us, adult to adult, is Ultimately more than the narcissistic demands of the child. Having children can help us break down our separation from our True Nature, but in my direct experience, this is a lower or beginning resolution, not Ultimate, to say the least.
What if I were to suggest to you that the symbolism of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac (Genesis 22:5 and 22:8) is an Ultimate symbolism of the sacrifices one must make to transcend their separation from the Godhead? Don’t be fooled into believing that Spirit is all “sweetness and light,” that children are somehow untouchably sacred when it comes to Absolute Realization. One need only read the personal writings of the mystics to see what was demanded of them. I too, had to “sacrifice my children” in order to “die” to my own separation; definitely one of the most difficult things I had to do to Unite with the Eros and Agape, or God and Goddess of my being…and that was the initial “death” that ushered me on my way to Absolute Freedom. I’m writing a book, perhaps you’ll read it someday…

Nada, it was you whom suggested that nurturing is so much more than conditioning; “But aren’t we so much more than our nurturing?” From that idea I stated. “Why can’t that knowledge or insight derive from, in part, that aspect of experience that is “so much more that our nurturing?” Therefore, if a contradiction exists it is of your making. Yet you direct imply that I made this so-called contradiction. I feel your explanations are way over the top, and again do not speak to that which I originally posted. It is difficult responding to all of your thoughts, when in fact you have taken the discussion, in my view, far afield, and at the same time completely failed to respond to the precise ideas I tried to express. A meaningful dialogue should be guided by a compassionate need to understand, and communicate. When you imply, incorrectly, that I am in contradiction, such compassion is absent. Further, I did not mean to suggest that a child is a ‘direct’ teacher. I also stated that “Nature, if faithfully observed, its forms and processes accurately perceived, can be a true teacher.” This context, clearly disregarded, limits my actual meaning. You failed to consider what I deem to be the most fundamental statement in my last posting as to the very idea of a true teacher; “As well, is it not our conditioned thinking that dictates as much. Where does this idea come from if not conditioned thought. I respectfully ask you to consider this.”
I a not writing a book, but I now believe that would be necessary to explain to you the obvious and simple truth in your terms. Look, I fully realize that this wonderful website is, if not predicated upon the idea of a “true teacher,” is perceived as such. Most of the comments seem to be ‘preaching to the choir.” That’s fine, as far as that goes. Still, differing views, expressed with absolute sincerity should be encouraged to engender rethinking, restating, and expanding thoughts and opinions. There are certainly vested reasons why the idea of a “true teacher” must, of necessity be maintained in the minds of many personalities. Such ideas do not operate in a vacuum. Further, history teaches us that the idea of a ‘true teacher” if fraught with serious consequences. Sadly, there are many individuals willing to destroy themselves, and innocent men, women, and children following the dictates of so-called “true teachers.” That is precisely why this concept must be fully explored, and seen for what it is; and idea that potentially steals from the willing participant the ability to perceive directly, and derive insight that can potentially transcend the dictates of any so-called “true teacher.”
I am going to conclude my present participation with reference to a book and quote that comes to mind while reading your comments. The late Tibetan scholar, Chogyam Trungpa, wrote in his book,”Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism,” “Walking the spiritual path properly is a very subtle process; it is not something to jump into naively. There are numerous sidetracks which lead to a distorted, ego-centered versions of spirituality; we can deceive ourselves into thinking we are developing spirituality when instead we are strengthening our egocentricity through spiritual techniques. This fundamental distortion may be referred to as spiritual materialism.” I suspect most people on a genuine spiritual path must grapple with this potential. Certainly individuals of this path should be aware of this possible sidetrack. Thank you for allowing me to participate in this discussion.
Bravo, Nada! The Dharma is timeless; every great teacher, i.e., Guru, Master, teaches what Andrew shared above.

The actuality of the moment—or the here now matter of fact–not the interpretation–that’s the one one keeps failing again and again—ITS a great teacher
It is easy to be in the presence of an unselfconscious child at play, or in the astounding beauty and organic truth of nature, and feel that one is being taught something natural, simple and forthright, that indeed, the purity of Spirit is shining through at that moment. For sure, boundaries do fall away when we become intimate and unselfconscious, forgetting for precious moments our habitual patterns and the petty selfishness of our individual fears and desires. And we can say that this is a true experiential revelation within our beings, that we actually felt touched and taught something precious about ourselves. But this is only a beginning level of spiritual awakening, one that is often identified with, over and over again, as all one needs to do to feel, or be, “spirit.”
What happens, though, when the joyful ease and beautiful simplicity one has experienced, and identified with, is instantly burned to mere dust in the Kosmic flames of the Divinely Awakened Soul? When faced with the Light of the True Teacher and Master of Divine Potential, those simply and easy experiences, if not seen through as true but partial, will force a contraction, indicating that “humility and courage” have not been cultivated to the degree that makes one available to the Beauty that the Teacher is radiating. For indeed, awakening is a process of successive ever-deeper, ever-higher unfolding, and to be exposed and immersed in the force and truth that a True Master IS, is to be surrendered to the Divine Will expressing itself through them, and feeling as if “burned in a great fire” is the most accurate metaphor for the process that the body, mind and soul undergoes. All the world becomes not what it was before, and “humility and courage” are the interior posture that allows greater reciprocity between Teacher and student.

A true spiritual teacher is an embodiment of peace,love,purity,knowledge,light and might.
Such a teacher would enable worthy students to reach their goal of perfection through their features and a clear idea of the future.

I woke up one morning last summer with the star of David in my mind. After weeks of pondering, and looking at Michaelangelo’s human and sacred geometry etc. i find a two trintiies at work. in my book “A Story to LIve By” is a play of Beloved, Wisdom and Intelligent Beauty in the Before the before, “Once upon a no-time…”

In pondering the Divine Human trinity, i feel \Humility is at the base, and reaching up are the wings of Surrender and Mercy (forgiveness living). As we live in humility and surrender, we can fully expect the enormous Cosmic Essence of Wisdom, Beauty and Compassion to be expressed in us.
So, Andrew, i fully concur that humility is paramount to avail ourselves in the making of this planetary spiritual shift. There are no spiritual heros here, but yes, an amazing community of lovers.

Dear John, Thank You; I accept your chastisement for what it is, but flexibility of mind is a capacity that makes one available to the “True Teacher” within. Fascinating, though, that you should invoke Trungpa right after stating that there are “many men and women willing to destroy themselves” to so-called true teachers. Trungpa, I’m sure you are aware, while ministering his “crazy wisdom”, was considered by many to be an unethical, over-sexed alcoholic. His method was to destroy built-up, status quo ideas that keep one separate…some just found him “crazy”…
So shall we ask again, “Where” does the True Teacher reside? From whence does It emanate?
The reason I led you down the particular path in my comments above is for the precise reason you stated in Trungpa’s quote; I am very interested in SUBTLE DISCERNMENT, and that includes contributing to the breaking down of myths that have been perpetuated through popular spiritual culture.
Your initial comment, while indeed coming full circle in its meaning, included two very persistent myths, namely, “children” or “childhood” and “nature” as “teachers.” I addressed this in my independent comment of Mar 29, and decided to directly address your initial comment in an effort to help you understand why these two particular myths are partial, fleshing out, as it were, the commentary. So perhaps this is why you feel I’ve gone “far afield.” You eroded, at least by my discernment, the greater meaning of your comment because it contained these myths, so it was directly to these I focused my attention.
Subtle Discernment as an *actuality* means that no stone is left unturned when it comes to the qualitative values inherent in experience,: the deeper one goes, the more subtle the experience becomes, until all experience resolves itself in Emptiness.
If we are to contribute to the transformation of culture, we must be fearlessly willing to accept all the ways we continue to perpetuate myths that keep consciousness in stasis. “Subtle reductionism” is what keeps perpetuating the two myths you mention. “Scientific materialism” is one of the “biggies” that many very rational and wise Teachers are trying to move culture beyond, most notably, Ken Wilber with Integral Theory. I’m sure you’re aware of him and his work. If not, please, enlighten yourself to an all-inclusive view. Andrew Cohen, also, through his teaching, has a “transcend and include” imperative, accepting that myths exist as part of the Spectrum of Consciousness, but need to be seen through in order to create culture anew.
This is what I’m asking you to do; See through the myths you were perpetuating in your comment.
Don’t be afraid to walk down unknown paths, John. The God and Goddess, Wisdom and Compassion, are always ahead of you, just beyond your sight. And Compassion is a force of Transcendence. Don’t believe you can actually know it until you become IT.
Compassion, oh yes, She will love and nurture you, cradle you in Her arms, right before She walks over and throws you off the edge into the Abyss, smiling as She watches you disappear into the darkness…

Instead, logical missteps are taken, and presented as noteworthy examples. For instances, you directly imply that Chogyam Trumgpa alleged behavior disqualifies him as a worthy reference to cite. Hi John, Yes, I saw your “good bye,” but…
Creative dialogue isn’t only logical conclusions, it is trans-logically creative, also. Golden threads of potential appear in multiplicity every time we speak. Some are just more available to the “creative” that takes one beyond the logical mind’s strictures.
I said “some people think Trungpa was just crazy,” I didn’t say I thought he was crazy…I have appreciated him very much…
And for the record, I was very clear in my statement; “nurturing is conditioning: conditioning must be transcended: transcendence is possible because we are so much more than our conditioning.”
Take your time, read with transpersonal eyes so your vision is not clouded by the personal and the strictly “logical.”
Dialogic is the creative in union with the logical, a Balance of the He and She as the WE…serve the WE beyond your own defensiveness with “humility and courage.”
The “True Teacher” who bites you in the ass is the Self evidenced in the tooth marks…

How does one become enlightened? Does one need to work with a teacher to become enlightened?
I have been on 2 weekend retreats with you, and they were amazing, and i feel as though i’ve read and listened to enough books and videos/audios to be enlightened by now. The way most people describe awakening is like it so easy. But for some reason i haven’t been able to get it and it is really frustrating. I am pretty desparate to become enlightened, and you say that is required to become enlightened. A few days back I thought that i had had an awakening when i noticed the story that was going on in my mind. It kept replaying the same story over and over again, like “i am never going to get out of this” “i am the only one who has ever gone through” etc. And what i saw was that i am no different than anyone else, everyone has some story going on their heads that makes them feel special. And when i saw this i kinda stopped telling my self the story over and over again. Sometimes i am tempted to go back and resume that story, i don’t know why, because absolutely nothing good can come out of it. Because the story is always seeking for it’s end sometime in the future, not realising that it is being created now and it can end now. After realising this i thought that now maybe i am enlightened. I also had the experience that you describe you have, of feeling “I don’t know” and feeling a confidence because of that. But i am not haveing that experience right now. Do you think i had some kind of partial awakening, or am i just imagining all this. Sometimes i feel like maybe i am not really interested in spiritual evolution, im just doing for some reason that i am not aware of. But I really feel deep down that i want to be enlightened more than anything. And i feel like I am willing to die for it, kind of like nothing is going to stop me from getting it.
A little suggestion from a fellow traveller: Stop waiting for something to happen. Imagine how you would be if you were enlightened and be like that now. At least try. Sense of urgency is helpful but not if it is accompanied by impatience, which is only self-importance in disguise.

With all my sincere respect to you as a proficient Teacher of evolutionary Enlightenment, may I ask you if a true Teacher would use any forms of comparison to value either himself or his or her students ?
Is Truth a thing to be possessed ? Can It be possessed and fructified and sold in the marketplace in terms of more truth and less truth ?
It is true that in a developmental context, you tend to think on terms of higher and lower . I may admit the developmental context of the comic unfolding , but could it be that the higher is a INCLUSIVE process and therefore could in anyway separates itself from the lower . Hence, it can never compares in ANYWAY WHATSOEVER.
Thriving on comparison can only strenghten the egositic self either in terms of inferiority or superiority .Where is Affectionate enlightenement for the flowering of relationships in this culture based of gross and subtle comparison ?
Ultimately your true teacher is your Authentic self or [The Evolutionary Impulse]. An [in body] Authentic Spiritual Master or Teacher is a shortcut to enlightenment or awakening. Spiritual Light and Spiritual Sound [Although experienced differently] are both from the same source ie :-The Evolutionary Impulse, God or Infinite Being .There are some souls on Andrew’s blog who have had these authentic mystical or spiritual experiences of either: “spiritual light or spiritual sound”, or both .When the Authentic self awakens within you [ not intellectually but spiritually ] the person is transformed for ever.There are many levels of samadhi [and each one is on a higher vibrational frequency to the previous one] Eventually we will all be transformed into spiritual light or lightbodies, and finally ascend and merge with the Source [ As did Christ, Buddha and Krishna ] Most of us have a long way to go yet, but we’ll get there in the end “When the student is ready the [Inner master] will appear”.
